Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and St Andrew’s Theological College
The vision for the Archdiocesan site at 242 Cleveland Street, Redfern unfolds through a comprehensive, long-term masterplan, which aims to reposition the Archdiocese at the core of the Greek Australian community. The project includes upgrades to the infrastructure and role of St Andrew’s Theological College, as well as the creation of a Library and Museum, with religious and cultural exhibits that reflect upon Greek Australian heritage and the history of our immigration.
The full project will consist of five stages to be realised over the course of two decades. The first stage envisages the careful, sensitive restoration and refurbishment of the heritage-listed Cathedral of the Annunciation of our Lady, designed by the famous architect, Edmund Blackett. Originally St Paul’s Anglican Church, its Decorated Gothic design became one of the established architectural models for parish church construction throughout
NSW. The former rectory designed by John Burcham Clamp and the new buildings will be connected and together will accommodate worship spaces, function rooms, a museum, library, offices, theological college domiciles, guest domiciles, bookstore and the dean’s residence.
Later stages include the reconstruction of facilities which house St Andrew’s Theological College and the administrative departments of the Archdiocese, with provision for the creation of the Museum and Library. In meeting these needs, the community facilities form the jewel of this ambitious long-term project that will ultimately enable the Church to better-connect and engage with the Greek Australian and broader Australian community.
Sustainability has been a driving consideration in the design of the project and ESD initiatives have been incorporated to reduce energy demand and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
